417_lgFt. Lauderdale had some upsets and surprises as champions were crowned.

Ft. Lauderdale was the backdrop to an exciting FILA World Grappling tournament Saturday. Grapplers from five different countries were vying for 5 different weight titles.

Although having an upset loss to fellow American and bronze medalist Tammi Musumechi in her last match, Lisa Ward (Pictured left) was able to total enough points to win the 50kg title. Felcia Oh (USA) got the silver.

In a highly competitive 55kg division, Laurence Fouillat (France) went undefeated and claimed the championship.

In what was considered an upset, Jessica Aguliar (USA) defeated Tara LaRosa (USA) in her second match to claim the 59kg title. LaRosa would defeat Sonja Raeber (Switzerland) via an arm triangle choke to get the silver.

Sarah McMann (USA) avenged her loss to Shayna Baszler (USA) in the world qualifier, claiming the 63kg title. Baszler would take the silver, avenging her loss to Miesha Tate in the world qualifier. Sheila Bird (Canada) would take the bronze.

It would come down to two undefeated grapplers in the last match in the 67kg division, as Tori Adams (USA) would face Romy Ruyssen (France). Adams would get the decision 3-0 and win the gold, leaving Ruyssen the silver.
