My husband has his own BJJ Academy. He would like me to train with him and I am very interested. I’m 34 years old and just had a baby 3 months ago. I feel I may be too old and not in good enough shape. Anyone train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu have any advice for me? Thanks.

Your never too old to train. You will gradually start to get into shape by training.

I started at 37 and Maura was 35.
She stopped because of physical disability not age.

Besides, the whole point of the art is to allow the average joe (or Joanna in this case 😛 ) to be able to use trained technique to defeat the bigger stronger opponent.

Not being in shape is more of a reason to do it than not.

Just because you train doesn’t mean you have to compete…your husband isn’t going to feed you to the lions after one month of training…at least I hope not.

My class features a 53 year old, 130 lb. blue belt the chokes my 200 lb. ass out every week. AGE IS NO EXCUSE.

    Give it a shot. 😉

I’m 30 and a working mom. We have every different age and size you can imagine.
I was out of shape when I started BJJ and now I’m in the best shape of my life. Ok, not this very moment b/c I’ve been taking it easy for about 6 months but, you get the picture…
My advice would be to start training 2 times per week, going nice and easy until you get the hang of things. I only say that b/c you are a new mom and you don’t want to be all sore, tired and achy AND breastfeeding. So go easy on yourself but GO!

Definitely start training!! I started BJJ when I was 34 and not in the best shape. I have kids as well and always kind of used them as the excuse for not getting in better shape. Trust me, your kids will love having a fit, active mother who, as an added bonus, can kick some butt! 😀

Go for it…start a couple of times a week, expect to be sore and also expect to love it.

Like someone said, you get in shape BY training, not the other way around.

Plus it’s not like you’re going to fight in PRIDE or the UFC next year 🙂 It’s fun 😀 It’s my favorite!
