My wife Rebecca posts here from time to time, but is maybe a bit shy to post the news on the fight she had last weekend. Rebecca won her debut MMA fight via split decision against a very tough Thricia Poovey from New Mexico. This was the very first female King of the Cage match in Canada. In her post-fight interview Rebecca commented that her opponent hits very hard, and she has the battle scars to prove it. I posted a “blow by blow” review of the exciting fight on our website:

I am VERY proud of her.

Congratulations on a big win. No need to talk about the tough fight, just look at the post fight picture of the smiling combatants…both have the bumps and bruises to prove it was tough!

I must say, looking at those pictures, the fighters at your gym ceratinoly take fitness and diet seriously. There are many ripped people (including your wife Rebecca), students and instuctors at your gym. (Although it seems Rebecca and the guy pictured had cut for fights). I think that says a lot about a gym and its instructors. I have been to too many where the students look like they do not understand the importance of complete training…not just showing up to a class and rolling three times a week, but running and some sort of strength training on those off days, as well as eating healthy.

Believe it or not Rebecca did not cut for the fight. The fight was at 120 lbs., her walking-around weight.

    You should be proud.

One would be hard pressed to see another female Canadian MMA fighter beat a non-Canadian. That was quite an achievement.

It doesn’t look like she has anything to cut! That’s awesome!

I could actually fight as low as 115 lbs as that was actually what I weighed in at. I didn’t really try to get that low, I just wanted to be sure I made weight so did not eat much that day and drank a little less water. I had been eating super healthy, not drinking any alcohol for 2 months and of course training like a mad woman so keeping my weight down was no problem. Being around some of the guys that did have to cut made me think that I do NOT want to do that. These guys were just a “tad” irritable and I can’t imagine that it’s very good on the body.

Anyway, thanks for the support and I am really looking forward to fighting again.

I just received some pics from the fight. The photographer did a great job. Please note that they are Copyright 2006 SleepyMongrel Photography Inc.
