So what’s the Australian MMA scene like? How many shows per year? how many big/small promotions? women fighters besides Mandy?

I think the Australian MMA scene is still fairly small. The Mandy Stewart/Fiona Attiig fight at Spartan Unleashed was the first women’s MMA title here. A guy at my club told me that MMA/NHB fights are illegal in all states except Queensland, although I’m not sure how accurate that is. http://www.fightergirls.com

Boxing matches between male/female or female/female are (or at least in the past) were banned in New South Wales. In 2001, two female boxers were supposed to give an exhibition match at a NSW university, but after receiving legal advice that they and the promoter faced fines and 6-12 months imprisonment for promoting an illegal event, the fight was called off at the last minute. Don’t know if the laws have been changed since then.
