I am a counselor, and would love to combine my passion of counseling and MMA. My trainer is really interested in starting some kind of after school program for at-risk youth, too. Does anyone know of any programs like these or have any good resources to check out? Links to studies of how training can actually reduce street violence? I think I heard BJ Penn had something like this, but I can't find a whole lot about it. Any feedback/thoughts/ideas/resources would be really appreciated!!

Can I suggest that you first gain medical advice on how far to go especially when dealing with training that leads to blows to the head. Do not seek advice from medical people who are completely opposed to combat sports, seek it from medical people who are involved in sports medicine as they will have a more balanced view of the matter.

The main reason for gaining this advice is so you learn what is a safe level of training and endeavour for children of various ages. If kids are pushed too hard too soon they are more likely to loose interest in the sport.

This is one of our primary goals and passions. Transitioning 'from the street to the ring' for all the various reasons you mentioned, although our focus is on females. Part of what we will be launching is a network that we've been building specifically for this purpose, literally thousands of girls already. For now here are a couple general links to check out for more ideas:
