[quote]As MMAjunkie first reported, Strikeforce women's featherweight champion Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos (10-1 MMA, 4-0 SF) will fight on Dec. 17.

Japanese product Hiroko Yamanaka (12-1 MMA, 0-0 SF) will look to unseat the current titleholder.

Strikeforce officials announced the booking during Friday night's Strikeforce Challengers 19 broadcast on Showtime.

The company did not announce which event will host the bout, but MMAjunkie.com has confirmed with multiple sources that the contest is scheduled for a Dec. 17 event at Valley View Casino Center (formerly San Diego Sports Arena) in California.

A Jewels and Smackgirl veteran, Yamanaka carries an impressive eight-fight win streak to the cage. The 5-foot-11, 32-year-old's lone loss came in an April 2008 loss to Hitomi Akano, but Yamanaka avenged the result in March 2010.

Fighting professionally since 2006, Yamanaka has earned eight of her 12 career wins via decision.

Meanwhile, Santos fights for the first time since June 2010. A contract dispute had left the dominant champion sidelined in recent months, but "Cyborg" recently reached a new deal with Strikeforce officials.

Santos, arguably the world's top female fighter, fought twice for EliteXC before signing with Strikeforce, where she defeated Gina Carano for the vacant belt and then knocked out Marloes Coenen and Jan Finney in subsequent title defenses.

This is probably the best opponent possible if Rousey doesn't want to fight Cyborg right now (and honestly it doesn't make sense either for SF or for Rousey to fight Cyborg right now). I commend Strikeforce for making this match. That being said I give Cyborg about 8-1 odds to retain.

This fight was announced far before any of the self driven Ronda hype train came out. I believe before she even faced Budd, and at that time she no where near deserved a title shot at 145, not that she absolutely does now.

If you haven't had a chance to listen to Marloes latest interview talking about all of the latest action on twitter and what not you should. She is very classy and really entertaining.

With all due respect to Marloes, did she not lose a title match (vs Cyborg) before dropping down a weight class and landing herself an immediate title
shot (vs Kaufman)?

Perhaps the situation is different but at face value it seems to me that
her argument which summarises as "fighters shouldn't get immediate title shots in a new weight class" might have carried more weight if she hadn't
done the same thing.

The difference being that she earned the right for a title fight at 145 and fought for it before pretty much being forced by Strikeforce to drop to 135. In my opinion the main reason for her loss being that she had to cut too much to get to 135. You can't really compare someone like Marloes who has been fighting for years and has a bunch of fights earning her way up the ladder, to Rousey having very little fights and then trying to drop to avoid Cyborg. Don't get me wrong, Rousey is a very talented fighter and no doubt has a bright future, but do things the right way and let your fights/fans do the talking.

Okay :

1 - I agree that Coenen earned the title shot in the 145 weight class.

2 - I don't think Coenen earned the title shot in the 135 weight class as she
hadn't found a ranked opponent prior to this. If, as you say, it was a case
of her being forced to by Strikeforce then the blame lies with them. However
for me the fact she has been fighting for years is neither here nor there.
It was certainly within the power of the Strikeforce powers that be to bring
in a fighter who had previously fought at 135

I agree with you that it was definately within the powers of Strikeforce to bring in a 135 for the title fight, just as it would be within their powers right now to bring in a 135 for the title fight instead of Rhonda, however with her running her mouth she is probably going to get the title shot imho. Having a mainly wrestling background it doesn't sit right with me that good old fashion hard work and wins don't do enough in this sport, there has to be some sort of other shennanigans going on. I would like to see this more as the best battle through the best to get shots at the title, however it seems as though it is more of a gimmic right now to get a title shot, and props to Rhonda for selling herself as that.

I really like Yamanaka's personality! I hope she is still happy with her fighting debut in the U.S. and I hope she can come back...Maybe a 145 tourney and the winner takes on Cyborg?
