While at Bellator 23 I spotted Lisa Marie Varon in the crowd. She was there with pro boxer and mixed martial artist Terri Blair to support a gym mate. She was kind enough to let me interview her. She is amazingly charismatic and it was an awesome interview. Unfortunately, I managed to poof the audio into the netherworld of “where did that file go”. Lisa was kind enough to answer the questions again. I am very thankful for her persistence and tolerance.

Fightergirls: Hi Lisa, Thank you for taking the time to talk to Fightergirls.com

Lisa Marie Varon: THANKS FOR HAVING ME.

FG: I was a huge fan of your wrestling career. You were Victoria in WWE and Tara in TNA. Why did you decide to return to wrestling after retiring from the WWE?

Lisa Marie Varon: I WAS FRIED FROM THE WWE SCHEDULE, AND I WASN’T HAPPY WITH MY ROLE IN THE COMPANY. I APPRECIATED THE PRIVILEGE OF WORKING WITH WWE, BUT I THOUGHT IT WAS TIME TO MOVE ON. TNA OFFERED ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO WRESTLE TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY, AND WORK A LIMITED SCHEDULE. PLUS THERE WERE SOME AMAZING WOMEN THAT I WANTED TO WORK WITH. KONG IN PARTICULAR, I CONSIDER ONE OF THE BEST FEMALE WRESTLERS OF ALL TIME.

FG: Did the departure of Awesome Kong have anything to do with your retirement from wrestling?

Lisa Marie Varon: I NEVER USED THE WORD ‘RETIREMENT’. MY TNA CONTRACT EXPIRED. BUT I DO HOPE TO WRESTLE KONG AGAIN SOMEDAY.

FG: Over the weekend, I saw a AAA Lucha Libre show from 2002. You were in a mixed gender 4 person tag match. What was your Lucha Libre experience like?

Lisa Marie Varon: IT WAS LIKE A DREAM…YOUR DREAM…BECAUSE I NEVER WRESTLED IN A AAA LUCHA LIBRE MATCH…HAHA…DID I WIN? (George is feeling a bit embarrassed. I could’ve sworn it was Lisa Marie but my Spanish isn’t that great.)

FG: The first time you put that tarantula on someone you looked a little skittish yourself. How did that come about and do you like spiders?

Lisa Marie Varon: I WASN’T SCARED OF THE TARANTULA. IT FEELS SO SOFT AND DELICATE. I WAS JUST NERVOUS ABOUT HURTING HIM. THE SPIDER CHARACTER CAME ABOUT BECAUSE UNDERTAKER TOLD ME THAT I LOOKED LIKE THE BLACK WIDOW POOL PLAYER. I LIKED THE IDEA AND I WENT TO WWE WITH IT. THE WHOLE ‘SPIDER GIRL’ THING JUST SPREAD. NOW IT’S HOW I’VE BRANDED MYSELF. EVEN MY CUSTOM CAR SHOP IS ‘BLACK WIDOW CUSTOMS’

FG: What happened with the Kim Couture storyline?

Lisa Marie Varon: WE WERE SUPPOSED TO HAVE A STARE DOWN TO HELP PROMOTE HER UPCOMING FIGHT. IT WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF MY WRESTLING MATCH, WHICH IS INTENSE TO BEGIN WITH. SHE PUT HER HANDS ON ME, AND I STARTED TO GO AFTER HER. SECURITY BROKE IT UP ALMOST IMMEDIATELY. I TALKED TO HER LATER, AND WE PUT IT ALL BEHIND US. I ALSO TEXTED HER AFTER HER LOSS TO KERRY VERA, TO LET HER KNOW THAT SHE HUNG IN THERE LIKE A WARRIOR, WHICH SHE DID.

FG: You’ve been training mixed martial arts for a while now. What all do you train?

Lisa Marie Varon: I TRAIN FOR AN MMA FIGHT…BJJ, MUAY THAI, BOXING, SOMETIMES I SWEAT TO THE OLDIES…HAHA…I TRAIN TO FIGHT…

FG: Since you’re training are there any plans to compete in grappling events?

Lisa Marie Varon: I HAVE A LOT OF IRONS IN THE FIRE

FG: Are your plans to compete in MMA on track? When could we expect to see your first fight?

Lisa Marie Varon: I AM TALKING SERIOUSLY WITH A COUPLE ORGANIZATIONS NOW. I LOVE MMA. I DON’T EXPECT TO MAKE A CAREER OUT OF IT, BUT I’D LIKE TO STEP IN THE CAGE A FEW TIMES. BUT I ALSO FEEL THE RESPONSIBILITY TO HAVE A STRONG SHOWING, FOR ALL THE MMA FANS WHO DON’T TAKE PRO WRESTLERS SERIOUSLY WHO CROSS OVER TO MMA. SO I WANT TO FIGHT SOON, BUT NOT TOO SOON, IF THAT MAKES SENSE.

FG: Any chance we will ever see Tara in the wrestling ring again?

Lisa Marie Varon: I STILL FEEL THAT I AM AT THE TOP OF MY GAME. I DON’T CONSIDER MYSELF RETIRED. WE’LL HAVE TO SEE IF THE OPPORTUNITY PRESENTS ITSELF, AND HOW I FEEL ABOUT IT AT THAT TIME. MAYBE YOU WILL SEE TARA. MAYBE YOU’LL SEE VICTORIA. MAYBE YOU’LL SEE LISA MARIE VARON.

FG: In closing, is there anything you would like to add?

Lisa Marie Varon: I AM WORKING ON SEVERAL ‘PROJECTS’ RIGHT NOW. IF YOU WANT TO FOLLOW MY GOINGS-ON, I’M ON TWITTER, FACEBOOK AND MYSPACE…AND IF THAT DOESN’T MAKE ME ENOUGH OF A GEEK, I’M GOING TO CATCH A MATINEE OF TWILIGHT ECLIPSE TOMORROW. TEAM EDWARD!
