My girlfriend is 5’4, slightly over 100 pounds (about 8 stone). What martial arts/self defense is best suited for someone of her body type.

    Sincerely,
    Sebastian

    I think a “stone” is 14 lbs (or maybe it’s 12).

Grappling is probably the best thing she could do (and that’s for any body type). I think it’s best to do a combination of things but if you’re only going to choose one, grappling is probably your best best.

jiu-jitsu is the best for smaller people, unfortunatly she’ll be outweighed by everyone except smaller kids. it would be a great way for her to learn where her power is and isn’t though. are you in australia?

The best thing to do is to have her try many different arts suggest that she focus on the one that she is the most interested in. Are there arts that can be argued as more effective in certain self defense situations? yes…but none of that matters if she won’t stick to it due to lack of interest.
If not focused and commited to training…and it is for Self Defense only…learning to correctly use a firearm would be the best thing to do.

Thanks for the replies. I looked up jiu jitsu and it seems the best for her. I dont think she would want to go head to head with a guy standing up considering the strength advantage men have.

She should also consider buying pepper spray and getting some training with it.
