Interview questions from FIGHTER GIRLS:

What first interested you / got you started in wrestling?

When I was in 5th grade, a teacher at my school noticed how athletic I was and asked me if I’d like to try wrestling on the team he coached. I started practicing a few months later when I was a 6th grader. At that time I had never been on a sports team or played any sports except for recess and P.E. activities at school. I knew very little about wrestling, but found it to be a lot of fun.

How long have you been wrestling?

I’ve been wrestling year round for about two and a half years. During the school season I wrestle with my team and during the off season I train with a wrestling club 3 days a week so I can continue to get better.

How do you feel as a girl in a male dominated sport? What is it like to
fight the boys on the mat?

I’m fine with it. Practicing with boys makes me better, and wrestling against boys provides a challenge that I enjoy. The number of girl events is growing each year, and and many of the regular tournaments we attend have girl divisions. When I can, I enter both girls and boys divisions.

What is your favorite thing about wrestling?

It’s a really tough & physical sport, so I think just being successful is my favorite part. I’ve had a lot of really neat experiences through wrestling that I probably wouldn’t have had, like traveling out of state for big tournaments and meeting professional athletes.

Wrestling is a time consuming extra circular activity with lots of
training and weight management involved. Is it hard to balance all that
and school?

Yes, it can be a challenge to keep up with it all. I want to wrestle in college, so I work hard in school and do my best to keep a 4.0. If I have the grades to prove I’m a serious student, my chances of wrestling in college are a lot better. Weight management hasn’t been too difficult yet, but I do have do watch what I eat. To ensure I make weight for big tournaments I change my diet several weeks before the event.

Do you know anything about MMA? Might you be interesting in diversifying
and trying it out one day?

Absolutely, I love MMA! I’m already learning how to strike, and I know a few submissions too, mostly key-locks, and chokes. For now, wrestling is my focus and I’m hoping it will get me into college. I’d really like to continue learning to fight so I can combine those skills with my wrestling and possibly fight in the UFC someday.

What drives you to continue wrestling and training?

Mostly it’s my love for the sport, I want to be the best. Also the opportunities the sport will provide me in my future. I get a lot of encouragement from my family and my coach supports me a lot too. The last two or three years have been a lot of fun, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next.
