Wal-Mart was shutting down more than 100 locations in the U.S. on Thursday, including five stores in Southern California. 100 Wal-Mart Stores Closing
The mega-retailer had announced earlier this month that it was closing 269 stores worldwide, 154 of which are in the United States.
It began shutting down stores on Jan. 17, two days after the closures were announced on the company’s website.
Two stores located in the Los Angeles area were shut down in the in initial wave of closures, the Neighborhood Market located at 701 W. Cesar E Chavez Ave., in Chinatown, and the Wal-Mart located at 4101 Crenshaw Blvd., in the Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw neighborhood of South L.A.
Five other stores in Southern California were scheduled to close on Thursday.

The locations are:
- 151 East Fifth St., Long Beach
- 2408 North Lincoln Ave., Altadena
- 6820 Eastern Ave., Bell Gardens
- 12120 East Carson St., Hawaiian Gardens
- 2045 East Highland Ave., San Bernardino
Most of the remaining closures were slated for Thursday, though some were scheduled to shutter for good on Feb. 5, according to the company’s website.
The Wal-Marts being shut down were generally poor performers, and most were situated within 10 miles of another location. Two-thirds are smaller Wal-Mart Express locations, 12 are U.S. Walmart Supercenters, and four are Sam’s Clubs. 100 Wal-Mart Stores Closing
About 10,000 store employees will be impacted in the U.S. with a total of 16,000 company associates affected worldwide, according to Wal-Mart’s website.
